What Can You Say from the Pulpit?Posted on August 29th, 2011.
As a follow-up to our last post regarding the dangers of political involvement, we wanted to share a brief article that was just posted by the Alliance Defense Fund. This article (found here) also serves as a reminder that the Johnson Amendment of 1954 prohibits pastors from endorsing or opposing candidates for office from the pulpit. The ADF believes that the current law is unconstitutional as applied to churches, and it currently has an initiative in place to challenge it in court.
For more information on what pastors can and cannot say from the pulpit, you can download “Guidelines for ‘Politial Activities’ of Churches and Pastors”. Pages 3-5 of the resource provide an excellent starting point for pastors looking to distinguish what they CAN do as an individual as opposed to what they CAN’T do as an official church representative.
